Earn red and gold master points at Autumn regional

October 5, 2018

Local duplicate players are reminded that the annual District 3 Autumn regional will get under way this Monday at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Danbury, about a 45-minute drive from downtown Greenwich.

The seven-day tourney offers pair and team events daily Tuesday through Saturday and culminates with two Swiss team contests on Sunday. Players can earn red and gold master points — which are awarded only at regionals — in virtually all events. For further information on events and starting times, see last week’s column or go to www.bridge-district3.org.

Today’s quiz: Here is another in the current series of quizzes on basic bridge probabilities. In the following problem, you are given your own and the dummy’s holding in two different suits and are to determine the best percentage play in the specified circumstances.

YOU: S AQ5, D AK76; DUMMY: S 432, D 432

You are playing a notrump contract and are in dummy for the last time. You need an additional trick and cannot afford to lose the lead to the opponents more than once. Should you concede a diamond trick to the opponents in the hope that the opposing diamonds are divided 3-3, or should you take a finesse in spades?

Answer: The chance of a 3-3 break in diamonds is 36 percent, while the spade finesse offers a 50 percent chance of success. If you had an additional entry to dummy, you could afford to delay the finesse and test the diamonds first. But since you are in dummy for the last time, you should opt for the play that provides the better chance of succeeding in the long run.
