Old buddies: Principals from Raleigh, the coast spark idea for Florence donation drive
Friday marks two weeks since Hurricane Florence made landfall at Wrightsville Beach, but that community and many others are faced with a long road to recovery.
That’s why Athens Drive High School is stepping up to help fellow students in need.
The students have already collected supplies to donate to students in Duplin County, one of the areas hit hard by Florence. Twenty-eight students are behind the donation drive that has been in effect at the school for several days.
Around 7 a.m., the high schoolers will start loading supplies into van. The vans will travel to Wallace and deliver the donations to the Wallace Fire Department, where they’ll eventually be distributed to students at Kenan High School.
Officials say the principal at Athens Drive went to graduate school with the principal at Kenan High, and that is one of the factors that brought the two schools together.
