Westmoreland Campus Clippings: Saint Vincent’s Aston is rookie of month
Freshman Laura Aston has been the top finisher for the Saint Vincent women’s cross country team in three of four meets so far this season.
Her fast progress in September earned her Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Rookie of the Month honors.
Aston, a Hempfield graduate, won the SVC Invitational in a time of 25 minutes, 31 seconds. She also finished second at the SVC Early Bird Invitational (26:00), was eighth at the Waynesburg Invitational (22:30) and finished 40th at the larger-scale Louisville Classic 5K (20:08.5).
Geneva: Senior defensive back Zach Hall (Norwin) returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in a 26-20 loss to Bethany. He also posted seven tackles. Sophomore linebacker Kendrick Wells (Hempfield) added seven stops, and freshman Anthony Cervone (Penn-Trafford) had some late rushes for the Golden Tornadoes. Cervone has moved to quarterback.
Grove City: Junior cornerback Jake Ross (Franklin Regional) chipped in three tackles for the Wolverines in a 36-33 victory against Westminster.
IUP: Junior linebacker Nick Amendola (Norwin) registered a career-high 15 tackles in a 30-27 loss to Slippery Rock. No. 14 IUP has dropped two games in a row.
Robert Morris: Junior receiver Tim Vecchio (Penn-Trafford) and redshirt freshman Anthony DelleFemine (Norwin) each had five receptions for over 50 yards in the Colonials’ 56-35 loss to Central Connecticut. Vecchio also scored on a 7-yard rushing touchdown.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 35-13 homecoming victory over Thiel. Sophomore quarterback Zavion Thompson completed 17 of 34 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns, and senior wideout Ariel Martinez has seven receptions for 116 yards and two scores for SVC (1-4, 1-3 PAC). Freshman defensive back Caleb Collins had a team-high seven tackles and an interception, and sophomore safety Jeremy Wodarek had two interceptions in the win.
Slippery Rock: Freshman forward Alex Vilchek (Yough) scored two goals to lead the Rock (4-6-2, 2-3-1 PSAC) to a 4-0 victory over Pitt-Johnstown. SRU has an abundance of local talent, including junior goalkeeper Robbie Bailey (Mt. Pleasant), sophomore defender Ryan Collette (Greensburg Salem), sophomore forward Connor Jobe (Greensburg Salem), freshman midfielder Tyler Ramer (Greensburg Salem) and freshman goalie Jordan Bosas (Derry).
Cal (Pa.): Freshman defender Christiana Czegan (Mt. Pleasant) has started all 12 games for the Vulcans (1-10-1, 0-10-1 PSAC). Teammate Kellie Lynch (Greensburg Salem), a sophomore defender, has played in 11 games and has one goal.
Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore forward Abby LaDuke (Latrobe) leads UPJ (4-8, 4-7 PSAC) with eight points (two goals, four assists). Senior Claudia Torillo (Latrobe) has played 11 games on defense, and senior goalkeeper Leah Appolonia (Yough) has a .822 save-percentage for the Mountain Cats.
Eastern Kentucky: Junior setter Maria Ferragonio (Norwin) leads the Colonels (3-15) with 101 assists to go with 39 digs in 32 sets. Teammate Kierstin Schade (Hempfield) has eight kills in 28 sets played. ECU is coached by Norwin graduate Lori Duncan.
Grove City: Senior Laura Buchanan (Norwin) put down a season-high 23 kills to pace Grove City to a 3-1 victory over Chatham (25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21).
