Cubs Waive Fossas, Call Up Nieves
CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs waived veteran left-handed reliever Tony Fossas on Tuesday and called up shortstop Jose Nieves from Double-A.
Fossas, 40, was called up from Triple-A Iowa on July 12. In eight relief outings spanning four innings, Fossas had no record and a 9.00 ERA.
In 552 major league games with six different teams, Fossas is 16-24 with a 3.89 ERA. On Sunday against Colorado, Fossas did not retire any of the three hitters he faced while giving up two runs. He was booed loudly when replaced.
The Cubs already have two left-handers in their bullpen _ newly acquired Felix Heredia and veteran Terry Mulholland.
Nieves was batting .290 in 82 games for West Tenn with eight homers and 39 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.
