Women forced to remove head scarfs settle NYC lawsuit

March 1, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has agreed to pay a total of $180,000 to three Muslim women who were forced to remove their head scarfs for police mug shots.

The separate settlements for $60,000 a piece were filed Monday in Brooklyn federal court. In each case the women involved claimed their religious rights were violated.

One of the cases dates back to 2012 when a high school girl was arrested after a scuffle. The student was taken to central booking where she was forced to take off her hijab for the police photo.

A lawyer for the women, Tahanie Aboushi, told The New York Times that the women’s cases were all resolved without conviction and sealed.

A city Law Department spokeswoman said the settlements were in the best interest of all parties.
