NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Xavier University of Louisiana President Reynold Verrett has received an honorary degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai during 2019 commencement ceremonies.

At Thursday’s event in Manhattan, New York, officials say Verrett was honored for his achievements as a “celebrated educational leader, scientist and teacher whose work has shaped the course of higher education of many, and, in particular, the path forward for the next generation of STEM K-12 teachers of color.”

Verrett took office as president of the nation’s only historically black, Catholic university in 2016. He also has served as provost and chief administrative officer at Savannah State, Georgia’s first public historically black university.
