FIU shuts out Herd volleyball in Huntington

HUNTINGTON — FIU defeated Marshall University’s volleyball team, 3-0, in a Sunday match at Cam Henderson Center.

FIU won, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17 to spoil Senior Day for Marshall players Jayden Jacobs, Lauren Mattmuller and Shelby Conley who were honored before the match.

The Panthers are 15-11 overall and 7-5 in Conference USA play. Marshall dropped to a 10-17 season record and is 3-10 in the conference.

Margherita Bianchin and Nina Petranovic both had 14 kills for FIU. Lina Bernier made 13 defensive digs and Abbie Hughes had 40 assists.

Conley and Ciara Debell led the Thundering Herd with eight kills each. Amber Weber led with 14 digs and Autumn Elswick contributed 16 assists.

Marshall finishes the regular season on the road Wednesday at West Virginia University (6 p.m.) and Friday at Charlotte (6 p.m.).

C-USA soccer

NORFOLK, Va. - No. 1 North Texas defeated No. 6 Southern Miss in double overtime Sunday for the Conference USA women’s soccer tournament championship and a bid to the NCAA tournament.

Lauryn Bruffett scored in the 105th minute to give North Texas its second consecutive C-USA title.

Bruffett was selected as the tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player. Carissa Sanders from North Texas was the Defensive Most Valuable Player.
