Do you think it’s a good idea to raise the tobacco use age to 21?

Cleveland Heights is the latest Northeast Ohio city to consider raising the minimum age for buying tobacco, e-cigarettes, vapes and assorted other smoking paraphernalia from 18 to 21.

If the “Tobacco 21” legislation is approved, Cleveland Heights would join other cities with higher age requirements, including Cleveland, Columbus, Akron and Euclid.

The minor misdemeanor could mean fines for underage tobacco users and the potential revocation of sales permits for businesses found guilty of multiple offenses. The law could also impact hookah bars and smoke shops, which currently are legally frequented by 18- to 20-year-olds.

What do you think? Should tobacco be treated the same as alcohol? Why or why not?
