Southern California apartment fire displaces many residents

PICO RIVERA, Calif. (AP) — A fire that ravaged a Southern California apartment building has displaced about 300 residents.

The fire was reported in Pico Rivera at midafternoon Thursday and more than 200 Los Angeles County firefighters responded.

Fire Inspector Gustavo Medina tells City News Service the flames spread quickly through a common attic over the apartment units.

County Fire Chief Daryl Osby says the blaze affected more than 140 apartments, including 45 with fire and smoke damage.

The American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at a park.
