Two Arrested In Plot To Kidnap Governor
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ A prison inmate and his wife were arrested Thursday on charges of conspiring to kidnap Gov. Bob Graham and hold him until the inmate was freed, authorities said.
The inmate, serving a 12-year term for solicitation to commit murder, was arrested at the Union Correctional Institution, in Raiford, and the woman was arrested at the airport in Portland, Ore., state Department of Law Enforcement officials said in a press release.
The arrests followed an investigation begun in late November, when the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received information that an inmate was interested in paying to have Graham kidnapped.
The governor did not know of the matter until law enforcement officials told him about a week ago, said Jill Chamberlin, a spokeswoman for Graham. She said he has not been involved further.
″He said it is a law enforcement matter,″ she said.
Howard Crawford, 44, and Vicki Jill Crawford, 39, were charged with conspiracy to kidnap and conspiracy to commit grand theft.
The law enforcement department initially said in a press release that Mrs. Crawford’s mother, Donna Priest, 68, was also arrested, but spokesman Fred Schneyer later said that was an error resulting from a misunderstanding with Oregon police.
