Pittsburgh native Billy Gardell could return to network TV next fall as the star of a new sitcom.
CBS announced Friday that it has committed to a pilot production of a proposed series, “Bob Hearts Abishola,” an “instant leading contender” for the broadcaster’s 2019-20 season schedule, Deadline reports.
Gardell, 49,would star in the multi-camera series as a man who suffers a heart attack and then falls for and tries to win the affection of his Nigerian nurse, played by British comedian Gina Yashere. Yashere is known for her work on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and the Netflix show “The Stand Ups.”
“Mike & Molly,” the CBS show co-starring Melissa McCarthy that made Gardell a star, ended its six-year run in 2016.
Gardell’s credits span films “Bad Santa,” “You, Me and Dupree” and “Avenging Angelo.” He’s had recurring television roles on shows such as “Young Sheldon,” “New Girl,” and “My Name is Earl.”
Gardell, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son, still frequents Pittsburgh for Steelers games, appearances on radio station WDVE and visits with childhood friends who grew up in Swissvale.
The proposed series is being produced with Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions.
