Balmorhea State Park pool still closed for repairs
A West Texas swimming destination remains closed as repairs continue on a water release gate that became inoperable earlier this month.
Texas Parks and Wildlife officials announced that the gate that drains Balmorhea State Park pool in Toyahvale became inoperable on May 3 as they were preparing for its annual cleaning.
Because of the risk posed to swimmers and divers, the pool was closed and the cleaning was canceled as staff coordinated repairs on the gate.
Officials said that a reopening date will be announced when it is available.
The pool had previously been shut down in May 2018 after officials noticed serious structural issues and damage to the concrete apron under the diving board, according to a previous report.
Repairs totaling $1.8 million were made in September. New cofferdams were built and a distressed wall was replaced with a new one.
The Parks and Wildlife Foundation paid for the repairs along with more than 575 donations and a $1 million endowment and fundraising effort from the Apache Corporation.
