FESTIVAL Council to talk Mardi Gras

May 20, 2019

The full Beaumont City Council on Tuesday will officially begin to consider bringing Mardi Gras to the city.

The item is on the meeting’s agenda as a work session, which generally means the City Council will have an opportunity to learn more about an issue and ask questions but will not take a vote.

Mayor Becky Ames began serious conversations with Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas organizers in late April, after organizers failed to reach an agreement with the Port Neches City Council.

Organizers cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for opting out of future discussions.

Port Neches residents were concerned about parking, a possible parade route and how alcohol would be handled.

Ames said previously a lot more planning is necessary before any approval could be given for the event, but she’s optimistic.

Organizers have been looking for a more central event location after having the festival in Port Arthur for nearly three decades.

The say a decade of declining attendance and revenues prompted this expected move.
