Graduate Student Kills Ex-Wife’s Lawyer, Wounds Officer, Commits Suicide

December 2, 1995

BOSTON (AP) _ A graduate student aimed a gun at his ex-wife’s divorce lawyer and pulled the trigger, shot a police officer, then put a bullet through his own brain.

John T. Lin, 25, killed William T. Kahn and wounded the officer before ducking into a doorway and shooting himself Thursday night.

``The victim, Mr. Kahn, was not a random victim of violence,″ Police Commissioner Paul Evans said Friday. ``We believe he was an intended target.″

Kahn represented Natalie Ann Lima when she divorced Lin in April, claiming an ``irretrievable breakdown″ in the marriage that began in Cozumel, Mexico, in 1994.

Lima asked the court to bar Lin from interfering with her personal freedom, and the divorce decrees that neither Lin nor Lima ``shall molest or otherwise disturb the other.″

Lin, a part-time MBA student at Babson College, walked into his bank on Wednesday, withdrew all his money, and said, ``You won’t be seeing me any more. I’ll be moving on to bigger and better things,″ WCVB-TV reported.

A day later, Kahn, 48, approached Officer Donald M. Lee and said a man was bothering him. When Lee went with Kahn to investigate, they met Lin near a black Saab with its engine running.

Lin shot Kahn several times in the chest, then ran around a corner, pursued by Lee and Officer Jonathan Stratton, police said.

When he shot Stratton, Lee stopped to help and Lin walked around a corner and into an alcove. Witnesses heard a shot.

He was found dead, a gun in his hand and two magazines full of ammunition in his possession.

In Lin’s Saab, police found three boxes of hollow point bullets, a pair of handcuffs and a tape recording of Lin talking about how angry he was with Kahn. He did not mention killing Kahn or himself, police Supt. John Boyle said.

Officers fired no shots in the chase. Home by day to the city’s major banks and investment houses, only a smattering of bars and nightclubs are open in the financial district at night.

Stratton was in good condition after surgery. A bulletproof vest blocked a shot to his chest. A second bullet pierced his colon. Last year, he was decorated for risking his life in capturing the killer of a fellow officer.

The president of the state chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, George Ford, said two of his colleagues saw Lin shoot Kahn

``It sends a chill to anyone who does family law,″ Ford said. ``It’s obvious this fellow was stalking this lawyer.″
