IN THE NEWS: ONLINE LOVE FOUND WANTING

UNDATED (AP) — Looking for love in all the wrong places? The answer could well be yes — for those doing that kind of searching online. The Federal Trade Commission says romance-related scams generated more losses than any other consumer fraud reported to the agency last year. And, with Valentine’s Day upon us, the FTC is warning that such scams have surged lately. The scams vary. But typically criminals find their victims online, wooing them through a dating site or on social media. The practice can bust wallets, as well as break hearts. Scammers often woo their prey until they’re smitten to the point of falling for pleas for money. The FTC says the median reported loss for online romance victims was $2,600 — about seven times more than other fraud tracked by the Feds. And that doesn’t include the amounts lost by those who end up too embarrassed to report they’ve been taken advantage of by a false suitor.

IN THE NEWS: GOOGLE TO SPEND TO EXPAND DATA CENTERS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is fanning out its operations beyond its California headquarters — to help collect data. The company says it will be investing more than $13 billion this year alone on new and expanded data centers and offices around the U.S. In a blog post yesterday, CEO Sundar Pichai says this year will mark the second one in a row that it will be growing faster outside the San Francisco Bay Area than in it. Google says the new data centers will be built in Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia — and construction of the centers will employ 10,000 workers.

ON THE WEB: PANERA TO CLOSE EXPERIMENTAL CAFES

CYBERSPACE (AP) — It was an experiment — but one that didn’t pan out for Panera Bread. The company is closing the last of its cafes that let customers pay what they wished. The last Panera Cares cafe, in Boston, closes tomorrow — ending the project’s six-year run. Others — in Chicago, Portland, Dearborn, Michigan and Clayton, Missouri — had closed earlier. Panera says the pay-what-you-want stores just weren’t as profitable as regular Panera cafes.
