Passenger Subdues Bus Robbery Suspect
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) _ A man armed with a toy gun tried to rob a bus but was overpowered by a passenger who pushed him out the door and held him on the ground until police arrived, officials said Monday.
The suspect, Leon Reddick, 32, of Camden, was charged with robbery following the attempted holdup Sunday, said Camden Police Lt. Thomas Long. He was in critical but stable condition at Cooper University Medical Center with a head injury, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Long said a man boarded a New Jersey Transit bus, showed a gun and demanded money from the bus driver, Jeannette Rodriguez.
″She hit the brakes, he fell forward,″ Long said.
The hapless robber first hit his head on the windshield when he fell. Then passenger William Bonet approached, Long said.
″He grabbed Reddick and struck him in the head several times with the gun, which turned out to be plastic and broke,″ Long said. The man fell out of the bus when the door opened and struck his head on the ground, Long said.
Bonet, whose age and address were not disclosed, then held the man on the ground until police arrived, Long said.
No charges were filed against Bonet.
″We told him, ’Atta boy,‴ Long said.
