Prescribed burn taking place today in Hitchcock Woods

February 6, 2019

The Hitchcock Woods Foundation Prescribed Fire Management Team is conducting a hazard reduction burn on 30 acres of management unit W-1A today, according to an email from Woods Superintendent Bennett Tucker.

Management unit W-1A is in an area of Hitchcock Woods near Whitney Drive, Hastings Line and Highpoint Line.

The unit is just southeast of the Cathedral Aisle/Stable on the Woods entrance to Hitchcock Woods.

The unit was last treated with prescribed fire in 2014 and has been burned regularly over the last 30 years.

Because of wind conditions, the smoke will be lifting up and dispersing to the east over the central part of Hitchcock Woods.

Smoke could be smelled and visible in the Whiskey Road residential area near Whiskey and Coker Springs.

The prescribed burn was scheduled to begin around 10:45 a.m. It should be finished around 3 p.m.

The unit is a critical foraging habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker as well.
