Rey-Bellet Leads Skiing Run

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) _ Switzerland’s Corinne Rey-Bellet posted the fastest time Wednesday in a women’s training run for two weekend downhills.

Rey-Bellet, who placed third in a downhill in Canada and third in a super-G at Aspen, Colo., covered the 2,780-meter Corviglia II course in 1 minute, 38.46 seconds.

Canada’s Emily Brydon finished second at 1:38.64, and France’s Melanie Suchet was third at 1:38.75.

Reigning World Cup overall champion Renate Goetschl of Austria, winner of a super-G in Canada, and Melanie Turgeon of Canada tied for fourth at 1:38.93.

Italy’s Isolde Kostner, winner of the season’s first two downhills and the fastest in training Wednesday, had the seventh-best time, 1:39.06.

Preparing for her first World Cup downhill race since a crash at the World Cup finals in Crans Montana two years ago, Olympic and world champion Picabo Street placed 44th at 1:44.96.

The races will be Saturday and Sunday.
