Brazil: Rio governor admits ‘errors’

August 1, 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Rio de Janeiro’s embattled governor is acknowledging errors in his handling of protests.

Sergio Cabral told CBN radio in an interview aired Thursday he had “without a doubt” erred by not holding a dialogue with the demonstrators who have been protesting outside his beachfront apartment off and on since June.

They accuse Cabral of corruption and have called for his impeachment, as well as an investigation into spending on next year’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Earlier this week, Cabral appealed to them “as a father” to stop demonstrating outside his home, saying the protests disturbed his children, aged 6 and 11.

The anti-Cabal protests began during the wave of nationwide demonstrations that swept Brazil in June over long-simmering discontent over corruption and poor public services.
