Passport fairs offer weekend help with applications, renewals
The Cameron County District Clerk’s Office continued its series of weekend passport fairs Saturday in Brownsville.
The aim of the events is to make passport officers available to people who can’t get to the District Clerk’s Office during regular business hours, Chief Deputy Rick Cornejo said. Most of the participants at the fair hosted at Texas Regional Bank were first-time passport applicants, he added, though some attended to get help with renewals.
“The District Clerk’s Office has over 30 employees that are passport agents,” Cornejo said. “That’s why we’re able to have these passport fairs — because we’re able to accommodate all these people at one time.”
Cornejo said one common roadblock people face is not having their long-form birth certificate, which has more detailed information about their parents. If notified during a Saturday passport fair, he added, the District Clerk’s Office will make the document available Monday morning rather than asking the customer to wait for the regular passport service hours 1-3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
