Paul Simon to play ‘Saturday Night Live’ weeks into retirement from touring
Paul Simon will perform on “Saturday Night Live” next month, weeks after the Simon Garfunkel co-founder played the final date of his farewell “Homeward Bound” tour.
Mr. Simon will be the musical guest on the Oct. 13 episode of “SNL,” the NBC series announced Thursday, less than a month into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s retirement from touring.
The episode lands on the musician’s 77th birthday and will be hosted by Seth Meyers, a former “SNL” cast member and writer.
A longtime pal of “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, Mr. Simon has appeared on the program more than a dozen times since its inception, including serving as both its host and musical guest during the its second episode in 1975. He was a musical guest on the first episode of “SNL” following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and he made a cameo appearance on the program as recently as 2013.
Mr. Simon announced in February that he would retire from touring following a series of shows that culminated with a performance last week at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in his hometown of Queens, roughly eight miles from “SNL’s” studios in New York City.
“After this coming tour, I anticipate doing the occasional performance in a (hopefully) acoustically pristine hall, and to donate those earnings to various philanthropic organizations, particularly those whose objective is to save the planet, ecologically,” Mr. Simon said at the time.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 16, I’ve never taken a break and never really seriously thought about anything else other than music.”
Mr. Michaels, 73, produced “The Paul Simon Special” for NBC in 1977, as well as HBO’s live broadcast of the 1981 Simon Garfunkel reunion concert in Central Park attended by more than a half-million people.
Mr. Simon met his wife, fellow musician Edie Brickell, during her performance on “SNL” in 1988.
“SNL’s” 44th season premieres Saturday. The first episode is slated to be hosted by Adam Driver and feature musical guest Kanye West.
