FBI: Rate of growth has slowed in Americans heading to Syria

October 1, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director James Comey says the rate of growth for Americans heading to Syria to join terrorist groups like the Islamic State has dropped in recent months.

He told reporters Thursday that there continues to be a “small but steady draw” of people traveling to Syria, but that growth has slowed from the levels of last year.

He also acknowledged that it’s hard to be confident that the FBI knows everyone going there because of the multiple ways to reach Syria.

Comey said it’s possible people have been deterred by the realization that Syria is a “nightmare.”

A congressional study released this week concluded that government has largely failed to stop more than 250 Americans who have traveled overseas since 2011 to join or try to join terrorist groups.
