Marlins Send Outfielder Millar to Boston
MIAMI (AP) _ Kevin Millar was obtained by the Boston Red Sox in a cash deal with the Florida Marlins on Saturday after the Japanese team he agreed to sign with last month released him from his contract.
The Marlins received an undisclosed payment for the outfielder, team spokesman Andrew Feirstein said. He had no further comment. The Red Sox had no immediate comment.
Millar agreed in early January to a $6.2 million, two-year contract with Chunichi of Japan’s Central League, and the Marlins released him in exchange for a $1.2 million payment from the Dragons. The Dragons released him Friday.
The 31-year-old Millar led the Marlins with a .306 average last season, hitting 16 homers with 57 RBIs. The Red Sox didn’t express interest until Florida put him on waivers, a step necessary to complete the deal with the Dragons.
