Colleen (Payne) Rud -- Rochester

Colleen L. (Payne) Rud, 89, formerly from Rochester and Spring Valley, died on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at The Gardens at Cannon Falls. She was surrounded by her family.

Colleen Lenore Nash was born on May 29, 1929, in Gautier, Miss. During early childhood, her family moved to Spring Valley. She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1947.

Colleen was married to John A. Payne in 1948. They raised their family of four children in Spring Valley. John was employed by the Minnesota Highway Department. Following his death in 1981, she accepted a position with the Mayo Foundation House and then retired from Mayo Clinic X-ray Department in 1994.

In June 1989, she married Dayton R. Rud and lived in Rochester until she entered the Zumbrota Care Center in 2014. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church while in Rochester.

Colleen is survived by her children, John (Barbara) Payne, Jr. of Stewartville, Mary (Richard) Petersen of Cass Lake, Ronald Payne of Brooksville, Fla., and Chad (Suzie) Payne of Lakewood, Colo. There are seven grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Emerson of Otsego, Elizabeth (Jason) Coltom of Rochester, Adam Payne of Hastings, Jenna Walters of Pueblo, Colo., Christie Payne of Mound, Emily Payne of Burnsville, and Abigail Payne of Lakewood, Colo.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, both husbands, a brother and a grandchild preceded her in death.

In keeping with Colleen’s wishes, her body has been donated to Mayo Clinic for research. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
