Romanian citizen appears in court on hacking charges

March 23, 2015

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A Romanian citizen extradited to the United States in a computer hacking scheme has made his first court appearance.

Authorities say 29-year-old Mircea-Illie Ispasoiu (EE-spa-SHOW-you) appeared Monday in federal court. He’s accused of orchestrating a hacking scheme that targeted retailers, security companies, medical offices and others throughout the U.S.

Prosecutors say he obtained user names and passwords, along with credit card data, from unsuspecting victims. Authorities say he stole more than 10,000 credit and debit card numbers from one company and took personal identifying information, including fingerprints, from a company that ran background checks on job applicants.

Ispasoiu was arrested in November. He’s charged with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and related charges.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Monday night.
