John Yarmuth, Dem congressman, says aspects of Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal ‘totally impossible’

January 4, 2019

Rep. John Yarmuth, the new chairman of the House Budget Committee, criticized some climate change proposals by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as being too ambitious.

“The idea of, for instance, making every structure in the United States environmentally feasible is probably something that is totally impossible to do,” the Kentucky Democrat saidFriday on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”

“I mean it would be wonderful if you could do that, but nobody could afford that, so I’m not sure what purpose that would serve,” he added.

The newly elected Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a democratic socialist of New York, has proposed a “Green New Deal” initiative that calls for transitioning the country from fossil fuels to 100 percent renewable energy within 10 years. Last month, Democrats rejected Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s demands for a Select Committee on the Green New Deal, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi instead announcing a Select Committee on the Climate Crisis led by Rep. Kathy Castor.

Mr. Yarmuth said he’s “not sure” if the Budget Committee will even review Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s plan but acknowledged that some of it might be “worth looking at.”

Meanwhile, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez proposed Friday that funding for her plan could come from taxing the rich up to 70 percent.

“You look at our tax rates back in the ’60s, and when you have a progressive tax rate system, your tax rate, let’s say from $0 to $75,000 maybe 10 percent or 15 percent, etc. But once you get to the tippie-tops, on your 10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent. That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate. But it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more,“shetold Anderson Cooper in an interview that’s set to air on CBS Sunday.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez slammed Democrats for deeming her plan “too controversial” and said it’s only radicals that create lasting change in America.
