Heavy rain blamed for Indiana crash that left 9 injured

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say heavy rain that covered part of an interstate in northwestern Indiana is blamed for a multi-vehicle crash that left nine people injured.

Indiana State Police say the crash happened late Monday along eastbound Interstates 80/94 near Chesterton in Porter County when an SUV hydroplaned in the left lane. The SUV was hit by a car. Three other vehicles were involved, including one that careened into a water-filled ditch.

Nine adults were taken to hospitals with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Police say a heavy downpour caused the inside shoulder, left lane part of the center lane to be covered in water. The heavy rain was part of a series of storms Monday and Tuesday that caused flooding and other problems in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.
