Public Purse Wins Burke Handicap
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ In his U.S. debut, Public Purse, with Alex Solis aboard, followed the leaders until the stretch to win the $150,000 Carleton F. Burke Handicap by 1 1/2 lengths on turf Sunday at Santa Anita Park.
The 5-year-old was shipped from France one week ago after winning 5 of 10 European starts.
``We didn’t know what to expect with him just coming off the plane,″ Solis said. ``He’s got such a nice, long stride. You’re going to see a lot more of him here.″
The winner’s stablemate, Star Performance, with Corey Nakatani, finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of Achilles and David Flores, in a field of eight 3-year-olds and up. Blue Sky and Rate Cut were late scratches.
Public Purse, the 7-5 favorite, paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.60, taking home a $90,000 purse. The son of Private Account has earnings totaling $324,276 and six wins in 11 starts.
Star Performance returned $4.80 and $3.20 and Achilles paid $2.80 to show.
Public Purse, carrying high weight of 119 pounds, covered 1 1/2 miles over a firm course in 2:25 4-5. He saved ground in third place and came out a bit on the backstretch, going three deep out on the final turn before pulling clear with urging by Solis.
