7 treated after fire in correctional center’s laundry room

DANBURY - Seven employees of the Federal Correctional Center were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the prison’s laundry room on Thursday afternoon.

Upon arrival firefighters found a fire in a laundry bin that was brought outside the laundry room by FCI staff before the fire department arrived.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and were alerted to possible injuries by FCI staff.

A total of seven FCI employees were triaged and transported to Danbury Hospital for smoke inhalation, as well as inhalation of powder from dry chemical extinguishers.

All patients sere conscious.

Patients were transported in three City of Danbury Ambulances after triage by Medic 1.

A mass casualty incident was declared so Danbury Hospital staff could prepare for multiple patients.

The fire was started in a bin filled with towels in the laundry room and is under investigation by federal authorities .

The fire does not appear suspicious at this time.
