Outdated policy allows drivers to share license plate number
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A policy that allows different drivers with different vehicles to have the same Rhode Island license plate numbers has been a source of headaches.
Warwick resident Fran DiSpirito says she received a toll violation in the mail that was meant for another driver in a different vehicle with the same license plate character combination, but a different style plate. WJAR-TV reports that DiSpirito was told by the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority that the problem is a recurring issue.
State Department of Motor Vehicle officials say the agency heard from about 25 people each week in 2017, who said they’ve been wrongly ticketed due to duplicate plates.
Department Administrator Bud Craddock says the policy has not changed for many years, and lawmakers have made no effort to deal with it.
