Area Football Sectional draw

The IHSAA announced pairings for the football sectionals on Sunday. In area play, La Porte travels to South Bend Adams in a Class 5A sectional opener, while Michigan City hosts Munster in that same sectional. Both the Slicers and Wolves get byes on Oct. 19, so they’ll each play their sectional openers on Oct. 26. If La Porte and City then win, they’ll play each other in the sectional final on Nov. 2 in La Porte.

New Prairie faces South Bend Washington on the road in the first round of a Class 4A sectional, while South Bend St. Joseph meets Kankakee Valley in another opener of that sectional. South Bend Clay and South Bend Riley play in the first round, and Mishawaka faces Hobart in another opener of that sectional. All of those first-round contests will be on Oct. 19.

South Central travels to West Central in a Class A sectional opener, and North Judson/LaVille meet in another first-round game in that sectional. Triton/Culver meet in the top part of that bracket, and Winamac/Caston play in another opener. All of those first-round contests will be on Oct. 19.

La Porte Volleyball Sectional schedule

The schedule has been set for this week’s La Porte Volleyball Sectional. Play begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday with South Bend Adams and South Bend Riley. Penn and Plymouth meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday, followed by La Porte and Mishawaka at about 7 p.m. Saturday’s semifinals start at 10 a.m. with the championship set for 6 p.m. If the Slicers win their opener, they’ll play in Saturday’s second match at roughly noon against the Penn/Plymouth winner. Tickets are $6 per session or $10 for the whole week. Spectators may enter from either the main entrance off of I Street, or Door 23 off of F Street.

Area volleyball sectional draw

The IHSAA announced pairings for the volleyball sectionals. Michigan City plays Merrillville in the first round of the Class 4A Hobart Sectional. New Prairie faces Jimtown in a Class 3A Mishawaka Marian Sectional opener, and Marquette meets the host Cherokees in the first round of the Class A Morgan Township Sectional. Westville plays Kouts in another opener at Morgan Township, and LaCrosse faces the host Cavaliers in a Class A Culver Sectional opener. South Central meets Triton in another first-round match at Culver. Sectionals run Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Marquette wins on volleyball Senior Day

Marquette sent seniors Abby Henderson, Bri Moyer, Isabela Pacheco and Maggie Williams off with a win in their final match at the Scholl Center as the Blazers defeated Elkhart Christian Academy 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 25-6. Marquette won 17 of the first 20 points in the fourth set and never looked back.

Glenn football drubs Clay, earns first win

John Glenn’s football team thumped visiting South Bend Clay 51-0 to record its first victory of the season on Friday night. Nathan Creed rushed for two touchdowns for the Falcons (1-7, 1-4 Northern Indiana Conference), and Garrett West, Mike Lawler, Johnny Drews, and Seth Giese all had a rushing TD. West also returned a punt for a touchdown. Weston Salyer and Sam Bishop both had an interception for Glenn’s defense. The Falcons next travel to South Bend Riley next Friday night.

Slicers JV football gets edged by Wolves

La Porte’s JV football team fell 26-22 to Michigan City at Kiwanis Field on Saturday. Robbie Kiner had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run for the Slicers (5-3, 3-3 Duneland Athletic Conference), and Jayden Parkes had a 54-yard TD run. Kiner’s touchdown pass was a 35-yard strike to Ethan Rochon, and Kiner’s TD run was 38 yards. Defensively, Jaden Browder made six tackles, five assisted tackles and had one fumble recovery, and Justin Forker had four tackles and three assisted tackles.

Gushrowski bounces back at tourney

Michigan City’s Nicholas Gushrowski rebounded from an opening-nine 47 to card a 41 on the back, finishing his first round at the Hoosier Junior Championship with an 88. Gushrowski is tied for 67th in the field of 86 at Otter Creek North/West in Columbus.
