Illinois St. 73, Evansville 69

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Maurice Trotter scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half as Illinois State overtook Evansville in the closing minutes and held to win 73-69 Tuesday night.

Anton Cooper’s 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining put Illinois State ahead 71-69 and Trotter iced it with two free throws in the final 10 seconds.

The game was close through the first six minutes, before Evansville went on a 13-0 run that stretched the Aces’ lead to 12 points, 23-11.

Evansville (9-8) led at halftime 39-29. But Illinois State (14-6) had the hot hand in the second half, hitting 59 percent of its field goal attempts as Evansville went cold and made just 36 percent.

Evansville still led by 7 with 4:56 remaining, 67-62, after Marcus Wilson hit a 3-pointer, a jumper and another 3-pointer on his way to a game-high 23 points.

But those were the Aces last field goals of the game. A Kenny Wright layup, two free throws and field goal from Jamar Smiley and Cooper’s jumper put Illinois State ahead 68-67.

Wilson sank two free throws with 2:14 left for Evansville’s final points. Chris Hollender had 11 points for the Aces.

For Illinois State, Smiley scored 15 points, Muller had 12, and Cooper added 10.
