Michigan woman generates American flag wall out of pennies
CEMENT CITY, Mich. (AP) — Sometimes being broke has an upside.
“We were in need of a fireproof barrier for behind our wood stove and stone just didn’t fit into our budget,” Kayla Dominique, of Cement City, said to MLive.com.
So Dominique got creative. Really creative. Using 7,700 pennies and lots of hours of sorting and gluing, she created a centerpiece wall of an American flag with the pennies.
Using pennies of different age and wear, she was able to create the design. Finding many oxidized pennies that have a blue look to them helped make the project pop.
Dominique started building the wall in the basement on a board but quickly decided to attach the project to the living room wall so it didn’t get too heavy to move.
“It never was intended to be a piece of art. It just turned into that,” she said. “It just makes us happy to look at it. It’s a centerpiece of our living room, so we want to make it something cool.”
Dominique sees something in each penny.
“I think that the most interesting part about the pennies to me is that they all have their own story,” she said. “They’ve all traveled around with people.”
There is some interest from friends and family to see the finished product.
“Now that it’s done, there are a lot of people coming back to see it,” Dominique said. “They want to duplicate it. They don’t understand how the blue happened. They don’t understand my patience level. But I think once you start it in the middle of your living room, you can’t really stop. You have to finish it.”
