Court sides with inmate who sought date with nurse
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — An appeals court has reversed a sanction against a New Jersey inmate who wrote to a prison nurse seeking a date when he was released.
Shakey Norman lost a year’s commutation time and 30 days’ recreation privileges after he was found guilty of threatening the woman after sending the letter to her home. The woman said she never gave Norman her address.
Norman is serving a 10-year sentence for robbery.
In a ruling published Monday, the appeals court wrote that while the letter was inappropriate, there wasn’t evidence Norman threatened the woman.
The judges concluded that Norman should have been charged with lesser violations including making unauthorized contacts with the public.
