More hot weather in Cleveland’s forecast; a new September tradition

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Remember those pleasant days of mid- to late-September when temperatures could be counted on to cool off in northern Ohio after a hot summer?

They’ve become a thing of the past the last few years.

Cleveland temperatures are forecast to be in the mid-80s again on Thursday and Friday. If that holds true, it will mark the sixth and seventh days in the 80s after Sept. 10.

Such temperatures have been the norm the last couple of years. But before then, so many “hot” days were a rarity in Cleveland this time of the year, cleveland.com found in researching daily weather readings from the National Weather Service.

How much so?

Looking at just the last 20 days of September each year since the weather service’s official reporting station moved away from the lakefront to the airport in 1938:

Cleveland averaged 4.5 days a year in the 80s from 1938 through 2015.

In 2016, Cleveland had 10 days of 80-degree or higher temperatures during the last 20 days of September. This is tied for the third most.

In 2017, Cleveland had 14 days of 80-degree or higher temperatures during the last 20 days of September. This is the most for any year in this time frame.

In 2018, Cleveland could break the record set in 2017, or at least get close. There already have been five 80-degree or better days after Sept. 10, with two more days in the 80s forecast for the next two days.

Below is a year-by-year rundown of the number of 80-degree or higher days, as recorded by the National Weather Service at what is now Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
