Springfield man held on $100,000 in fatal crash
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — A Springfield man charged with driving drunk and causing an accident that took the life of his 3-year-old daughter and the driver of another vehicle has been held on $100,000 bail.
Not guilty pleas to charges including motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol were entered on behalf of 32-year-old Mauricio Velasquez at his arraignment Monday in Northampton District Court.
Police say Velasquez, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, with a neck brace, and with cuts on forehead and nose, crossed the center line in Easthampton at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday and struck a pickup truck driven by 71-year-old Charles Hoffman of Easthampton.
Hoffman and Velasquez’s daughter died. He, an adult passenger, and a passenger in Hoffman’s vehicle were injured.
Velasquez’s court-appointed attorney had no comment.
