NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — A Virginia high school student who is accused of having a loaded gun at school has been arrested.

The Daily Press reports school security searched a 16-year-old male student and found a loaded .38 caliber revolver on Wednesday afternoon. The Warwick High School student was identified as a sophomore.

The firearm was found after school officials say a female student told a school administrator that she had overheard a conversation about a student having a gun.

Newport News police spokesman Brandon Maynard says the sophomore was arrested and charged with underage possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property.

He was taken to juvenile detention after the charges were filed. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.
