Off-duty firefighter dies in accident in West Virginia

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — Officials in West Virginia say an off-duty firefighter has died in a head-on accident.

The city of Huntington says in a news release that 27-year-old probationary firefighter John Lambert of Ranger was killed in the accident Thursday in Barboursville.

The statement says Lambert was not working at the time. He had been with the Huntington Fire Department since September.

Huntington Fire Chief Jan Rader says the department and the International Association of Firefighters Local 289 are “deeply saddened by the passing of our brother.” She says Lambert “was a well-respected member with a bright future.”

Lambert is the third West Virginia firefighter to die in an accident in less than three weeks. Two Pratt firefighters were killed March 24 when their firetruck hit a rock wall while responding to a fatal crash.
