CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — After a two-year chase, a NASA spacecraft arrived Monday at the ancient asteroid Bennu, its first visitor in billions of years. It is the first U.S. attempt to gather asteroid samples for return to Earth, something only Japan has accomplished so far. With Bennu some 76 million miles away, it took seven minutes for word to get from the spacecraft to flight controllers at Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado. HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Attorneys for a death row inmate who is scheduled to die Tuesday say he should be spared because he wasn’t the one who killed a suburban Dallas police officer during a Christmas Eve robbery 18 years ago, it was other escaped inmates he was with. Joseph Garcia, 47, is slated to die by lethal injection after 6 p.m. at state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was among the notorious “Texas 7” gang of inmates who escaped from a South Texas prison in December 2000 and inmates were arrested a month later in Colorado. By Juan A. Lozano And Michael Graczyk. GUN ROBBERY-TRUCK — Police say thieves used a cement truck to break in and steal guns from a shop in suburban Denver. Officers in Lakewood found the truck still running with its tank spinning in front of the store and the doors to the shop pulled off before dawn Tuesday.
TEENS KILLED — A Colorado Springs man has pleaded guilty to his role in the gang-related killings of two high school students. The Gazette reports 20-year-old Diego Chacon pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of second-degree murder in the March 2017 shooting deaths of 16-year-old Natalie Cano-Partida and 15-year-old Derek Greer.
PITTSBURGH — The Colorado Avalanche visit the Pittsburgh Penguins in NHL action Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
BOULDER, Colo. — The Colorado Buffaloes have won three straight heading into their game against South Dakota on Tuesday night.
