Cabell Midland, Huntington High clash Friday

HUNTINGTON — Cabell Midland won an Oct. 19 football home game against Huntington High, 21-7, and the Highlanders are getting a rematch.

No. 10 Cabell Midland (6-4) goes to No. 7 Huntington High (7-3) for a 7:30 p.m. Friday contest in the Class AAA playoffs first round.

Spring Valley (10-0) is seeded No. 2 in Class AAA and plays a 7:30 p.m. Friday home game against Spring Mills (5-5). The Cardinals will travel all the way from Berkeley County in the Eastern Panhandle of the state.

Hurricane (5-5) made the Class AAA lineup as the No. 16 team and makes virtually the same long trek to face No. 1 Martinsburg (10-0) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Wayne (8-2) also ventures to the Eastern Panhandle as the No. 10 team in Class AA playing No. 7 Keyser (8-2) in another 1:30 p.m. Saturday contest.

No. 9 Mingo Central (8-2) has to travel, but nearly as far, for a Class AA game at No. 8 Point Pleasant (8-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Point Pleasant opened the season with a 42-35 win at home over the Miners.

Another game in the Class AA first round is No. 12 Weir (8-2) coming to Poca (9-1) to play the Dots at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Ohio teams Ironton, Fairland, Gallia Academy, Green, Portsmouth West and Portsmouth all lost their weekend regional quarterfinal games which left Wheelersburg as the only area team still playing. Wheelersburg (10-1) is seeded No. 1 in Division V, Region 20 and meets No. 5 Jamestown Greeneview (10-1) in a 7 p.m. Friday regional semifinal, neutral-site game at Herrnstein Field in Chillicothe.

Ashland (10-1) is still going in Kentucky Class 4A. The Tomcats have a 7:30 p.m. Friday second round game at Harrison County (7-4) in Cynthiana, which is about a two-hour drive to the west.

Russell (7-4) and Lawrence County (7-4) in Class 3A are among other Kentucky schools playing Friday.

Lawrence County’s first-round game was a wild 78-74 win at home against Western Hills. Lawrence County back Noah West rushed for 393 yards and seven touchdowns. University of Kentucky commitment Wandale Robinson for Western Hills had more than 400 yards of total offense.
