Barnwell takes on Blackville-Hilda tonight
Barnwell will kick off the Week 1 football action in the area when it faces Blackville-Hilda on Thursday night in Blackville.
The Warhorses are riding the momentum of a 54-6 victory against Williston-Elko, but head coach Dwayne Garrick still has his eyes on a few spots where his team can be a little sharper this week.
“We’re still playing some young guys (on the offensive line) that are making, not mental mistakes, but some physical mistakes,” he said. “We’ve got to get a little tougher down in there.”
Nonetheless, should Barnwell duplicate the formula from last Friday, the team could be in for another fast start.
Craig Pender was perfect passing the ball and threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns. The playmakers also shined. Dallyon Creech, most commonly known as a defensive playmaker, scored three offensive touchdowns – two rushing and one receiving. Ty Frazier was his usual dependable self in racking up 95 yards and a touchdown. Garrick said the Warhorses will need a similar showing this week.
“They’ve (the Hawks) got a lot of speed on defense and do a good job of getting to the football,” Garrick said. “Any time you’ve got kids that run around on defense, they’re going to make a lot of plays defensively.”
Barnwell’s defense can expect to see a lot of counter action from Blackville-Hilda’s wing style offense. Garrick is aware that sophomore quarterback Adonis Davis is talented and can strike with both his arm and in the run game.
He threw for 150 yards and ran for another 87 in the Hawks’ 28-0 victory against Bethune-Bowman in the season opener.
“They do enough on offense to give us a fit and give us some trouble,” Garrick said.
Barnwell enters the game having won the past seven games against their county rival.
