ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — A man who exchanged gunfire with a police officer who was pursuing him has been convicted of attempted murder.

Dante Allen was also convicted Monday of possessing cocaine and a weapons count by a Monmouth County jury. But the panel acquitted the 24-year-old Asbury Park man on two other weapons counts.

Authorities have said Allen fired at the officer during a foot chase in Asbury Park in November 2015.

The officer returned fire with seven shots, one of which hit Allen in the leg. Another one of those shots went flying into a nearby home, grazing the head of an 8-year-old girl who was watching television.

The girl was treated at a hospital and released that night, while the officer wasn’t hurt. Allen has since recovered fron his wound.
