Man pleads not guilty in teen’s fatal shooting
BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors say a man handling a firearm shot and killed a teen sitting in the front passenger seat of his brother’s car.
The Enterprise reports that 30-year-old Tony Semedo-Cardoso pleaded not guilty to murder Monday in connection with the death Friday of 16-year-old Alberto Tavares.
Prosecutors say Semedo-Cardoso fired a single shot from the back of Alberto’s brother’s car in Brockton, and the bullet went through the seat and struck the teen.
The teen was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Prosecutors have not said whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate. The Plymouth district attorney says the investigation is ongoing.
Semedo-Cardoso was held without bail.
His court-appointed attorney reserved the right to seek bail, saying he had only seen a “fairly short police report” and that more information was needed.
