U Of S Scoops Up Former Funeral Home For $950,000

April 16, 2019

SCRANTON — The University of Scranton bought a former funeral home on a piece of prime downtown real estate for $950,000. John L. Chipak and his wife, Patricia A. Fairall, of Overfield Twp., sold the former Chipak Funeral Home at 343 Madison Ave., at the Mulberry Street intersection, on Friday. The stately, stone-faced building, skirted by a low iron fence, was built in 1894, Chipak said. He and his wife, both funeral directors, retired and closed their funeral homes in Scranton and Dunmore in January 2018. “It was just time to retire,” he said. “We really didn’t have anyone in the family that could take it over.” University spokesman Stan Zygmunt said he couldn’t offer any details on the school’s plans for the property, but said school officials are always on the lookout for useful real estate in the neighborhood. “The University has a long-standing interest in properties near campus,” he said. “We look carefully at properties that become available that are near or immediately adjacent to our campus, which is the case with the property on the corner of Mulberry Street and Madison Avenue.” Contact the writer: joconnell@timesshamrock.com 570-348-9131; @jon_oc on
