Dodgers Activate Shaw From DL

July 13, 2000

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Los Angeles Dodgers closer Jeff Shaw, who hasn’t pitched since June 26, was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday.

``Being on the DL is the worst thing in the world,″ said Shaw, who had never been on the disabled list in his 14-year pro career. ``It’s a helpless feeling because you can’t do anything. You basically go and watch the ballgame. I hated it.″

Shaw, who had 124 saves over the previous four seasons, has 12 in 19 opportunities and an 8.00 ERA in 29 outings overall this year. Manager Davey Johnson will not put the right-hander back in the closer’s role immediately, instead, he will make his decisions based on individual matchups.

``As time goes on, it’ll work itself out. I don’t think it’ll take that long,″ said Shaw, who went on the DL because of tendinitis in his right elbow. ``But I’m going to do whatever is right for this bullpen, to get us on a streak to where we can save some ballgames.

During the All-Star break, the Dodgers optioned reliever Jamie Arnold and reserve outfielder Mike Metcalf to Triple-A Albuquerque and recalled catcher Paul LoDuca from the Dukes as insurance for Todd Hundley.

Hundley took a foul tip on his right thumb last Friday at Seattle, and is expected to miss at least three games.
