NEW YORK (AP) _ Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z has been indicted on an assault charge for allegedly stabbing a record executive during a nightclub brawl.

The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is accused of attacking Lance Rivera, 33, on Dec. 1 when a fight broke out at a party for the rapper Q-Tip at a New York nightclub.

Monday's indictment charges Carter, 29, with first-degree attempted assault and second-degree assault. He faces up to 22 years in prison.

Carter remained free on the $50,000 bail. An arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Carter's lawyer, Murray Richman, called the charge a bum rap and said he was disappointed by the indictment.

The rapper's latest album, ``Vol. 3... Life And Times Of S. Carter,'' is one of the nation's top sellers.
