S. Mississippi 71, No. 19 Tulane 70
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Melody Reed got a crucial offensive rebound, then made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to give Southern Mississippi a 71-70 upset Sunday of No. 19 Tulane in the Conference USA opener for both.
Reed scored 18 points as the Lady Eagles (7-3) rallied from a 9-point deficit in the final 10 minutes. USM took a 69-67 lead _ its first lead since early in the second half _ on Alyson Hardy’s short jumper with 30 seconds remaining.
Tulane (6-2) called two timeouts, then came back to take a 70-69 lead on Barbara Farris’ three-point play with 17.6 seconds left.
USM guard Angela Johnson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 9 seconds remaining, but Southern Miss retained possession when the rebound deflected out of bounds off a Tulane player.
After another timeout, LaShonda Smith misfired on a short jumper in the lane, but Reed grabbed the rebound and was fouled in the act of shooting.
Hardy and Smith scored 15 points each for Southern Miss, and reserve Felicia Wallace added 10 for the Lady Eagles.
The loss spoiled a career-high 31-point effort by Tulane sophomore Grace Daley, who also contributed four assists and five steals. Farris had 21 points, matching her season high.
