Newton, Perez post victories at national championships
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) _ Peter Newton, of Bellevue, Wash., and Angel Perez, of Miami, cruised to a two-second victory in the K-2 1,000-meter race Wednesday at the national Canoe and Kayak Championships on Lake Lanier.
Newton also paddled to victory in the K-1 1,000-meter competition, beating Perez by more than one second.
The duo beat Stein Jorgensen, of San Diego, and John Mooney, of Portland, Ore., in the K-2 race, with the bronze medal going to three-time Olympian Curt Bader, of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Chris Ball, of Irvine, Calif.
Local favorite Ruth Nortje, of Gainesville, won the women’s K-1 1,000, beating Kathy Colin, of Seattle, and two Olympians who finished third and fourth, respectively _ DeAnne Hammens, of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Dru van Hengel, of Santa Barbara, Calif.
In men’s canoe competition, Zbigniew ``Zebe″ Wadyznski, of Chicago, won two golds and a silver. He captured the C-1 1000, was on the winning C-4 1,000 team and teamed with Jim Werland, of Newport Beach, Calif., for a silver in the C-2 1000 behind the Seattle team of Jordan Malloch and David Fort.
Others on the winning C-4 team were Werland and two others from Newport Beach, Brandon Krovosa and Sam Couch.
