Hickman Seniors power past Falls City

The Hickman Legion Seniors got off to a hot start in the B1 Area Tournament being hosted by Beatrice.

Fourth-seeded Hickman defeated sixth-seeded Falls City 17-5 in five innings.They advance to play top-seeded Auburn at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Christensen Field in Beatrice.

Hickman didn’t waste any time building a lead. They scored eight runs in the first inning.

Sayre Burnley got the inning going when he was hit by a pitch and Cade Argo as then walked. An RBI single by Joe Osborn gave Hickman a 1-0 lead and the runners advance to second and third on the throw home.

A walk to Cullen Papenhagen loaded the bases and a passed ball allowed another runner to score, making it 2-0.

Cade Kohout’s sacrifice fly extended the lead to 3-0. A single and an error allowed Hickman to load the bases back up with still just one out.

Colbey Behrends then walked to force a run in, making it 4-0. Colson Hestermann’s two-RBI single made it 6-0

Burnley then reached on an error, which allowed another run to score and Argo’s sacrifice fly capped off the first inning scoring, making it 8-0.

Falls City bounced back, though, scoring three runs in the top of the second. Three singles, two walks and a hit batsman led to the three runs.

Hickman used power to extend the lead in the bottom of the second. Papenhagen led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.

Kohout then walked, stole second and scored on two throwing errors, making it 10-3.

Benes then hit a solo home run over the left-center field fence to make it 11-3. Tyler Monroe singled and Behrends walked to get runners at first and second with nobody out.

Falls City looked like they might get out of the inning with no more damage being done after a double play gave them two outs, but Burnley followed that up with a two-run home run to make it 13-3.

Hickman would continue to pull away and eventually end the game at 17-5 in five innings.

Gavin Dowding earned the win for Hickman on the mound.

With a win over Auburn on Saturday, Hickman would advance to plat at 6 p.m. on Sunday against the undefeated team from the other side of the bracket.

Falls City drops to the loser’s bracket, but will receive a bye on Saturday. They will play an elimination game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Syracuse 14, Fairbury 13

Third-seeded Syracuse beat sixth-seeded Fairbury 14-13 Friday night in wild first round game of the B1 Area Tournament.

With the win, Syracuse advances to play at 4 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday’s late game between Beatrice and Crete.

Fairbury jumped on top early against Syracuse with two runs in the first inning. They added four runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 6-0.

They tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning to lead 10-0.

Syracuse kept the game alive with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-3. Each team scored a single run in the fifth inning to make it 11-4.

Fairbury again looked to have put the game away in the sixth inning when they scored three runs to make it 14-4.

Syracuse roared back with 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 15-14 lead.

Fairbury went down quietly in the seventh inning to make the final score 14-13.

Fairbury will now play in an 11 a.m. elimination game on Saturday against the loser of Friday’s late game between Beatrice and Crete.

With a win, Beatrice would play at 4 p.m. on Saturday while a loss would put them in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
