Illinois secretary of state shares bus safety tips
Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding commuters and children to be mindful of bus safety in the coming year.
Citing eight crashes across the country that resulted in the deaths of five children in November alone, the release emphasized that it is illegal to pass a school bus when the vehicle’s red stop lights are flashing.
The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services recorded 84,000 incidents of motorists illegally passing stopped school buses in 38 states in one day, according to the release.
As part of Illinois’ Toby Tire School Bus Safety program, the public service announcement included a few tips for schoolchildren who ride the bus: Stay away from strangers; always look both ways while crossing the street, even in bus loading zones; speak in normal tones; always stay seated on the bus; and always stay clear of the 10-foot danger zone that surrounds the bus.
